The University of Wisconsin–Madison (University of Wisconsin, Wisconsin, UW, UW–Madison, or simply Madison) is a public research university in Madison, Wisconsin. Founded in 1848, UW–Madison is the official state university of Wisconsin and the flagship campus of the University of Wisconsin System. It was the first public university established in Wisconsin and remains the oldest and largest public university in the state.

Wisconsin is one of the twelve founding members of the Association of American Universities, a selective group of major research universities in North America. It is considered a Public Ivy. 26 Nobel laureates and 2 Fields medalists award winners have been associated with UW–Madison as alumni, faculty, or researchers. Additionally, as of November 2018, the current CEOs of 14 Fortune 500 companies have attended UW–Madison, the most of any university in the United States. In the 2022 QS World University Rankings, UW-Madison was ranked 75th in the world. For 2022, UW-Madison was ranked tied for 42nd by U.S. News & World Report among global universities.

Program Details

The Visiting International Student Program (VISP) welcomes non-degree international students for short-term credit study at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. VISP students enroll in regular university courses taught by world-class faculty at one of the nation’s top public universities. Upon successfully completing the studies, students can obtain official credits and transcripts from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The course credits approved by the CCU’s Office of Academic Affairs and related departments can be transferred to the CCU’s credits. Both undergraduate and postgraduate students can participate in this program. There are two track offerings for this program, one is the "Traditional Track" which welcomes students from all academic areas, and the other is the "Thematic Track" which welcomes students interested in focusing on one academic area of interest.

Traditional Track

Students who choose this track can choose relevant courses from more than 5,000 courses taught in over 160 Academic Departments and Programs across 13 Schools and Colleges. Traditional VISP Tracks students can choose to focus on one or two academic areas try courses in several departments to create the right schedule for them.

Thematic Track

Thematic VISP Program Tracks (https://visp.wisc.edu/thematic/) welcomes students interested in focusing on one academic area of interest. Students in these tracks are received personalized advising from faculty as well as from VISP Staff to find courses of interest during their time at UW-Madison. Academic areas are listed in the following: agriculture and applied economics, computer sciences, economics, educational policy studies, geoscience, human development & family studies, industrial & systems engineering, mathematics, mechanical engineering, medical physics, political science, statistics.

Eligibility Requirements

  1. GPA 3.0 or above
  2. English Language Proficiency Requirements

Traditional Test Options:

IELTS: Minimum of 6.5

TOEFL: Minimum of 80 (iBT) / 550 (PBT)

TOEIC: Minimum of 685

Online Test Options:

Duolingo English Test: Minimum 105

iTEP Academic: Minimum 3.8

TOEFL At Home: Minimum of 80 (iBT)

Application Deadline

The application deadline is listed below for future reference.

  • Fall Semester: Expected to be February 15th each year
  • Spring Semester: Expected on October 1st each year
  • Summer Term: Expected to be February 1st each year

Note: Prepare your application materials early for best consideration. The application deadline should be based on the admission announcement of each year.

  2. Once approved by the CCU Center for International Interchange, students will be notified to submit their applications on the UW-Madison VISP webpage. https://visp.wisc.edu/apply/
  3. The University of Wisconsin-Madison makes the admission decisions.
